The Navarro County Farmers Market is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7 am until noon This is a seasonal open air market located at 408 E. Meals on Wheels needs volunteers to deliver meals to our senior neighbors, stop and enjoy a short friendly visit, and observe to ensure the senior is doing well. Most routes take less than an hour. You choose how often you volunteer: once a week, a month, or just on occasion. You'll need your own transportation, a valid drivers license, car insurance, a working mobile phone, and pass a background check. Food Truck Friday is held on the first Friday of every month from April through September. Food and drink vendors from all over converge on downtown Corsicana. Live music, games, and of course, food trucks will be in the city parking lot behind Brick Streets Brewery, 224 E. 5th Ave., from 6-9 pm. This fun, family event is sponsored by Corsicana Main Street.
Mimosas at the Market is held from 10 am to 3 pm the second Saturday of each month. Mildred Baptist Church, 5502 S. US Hwy 287, Mildred, is opening Hope To Go Food Pantry soon. They are an official Community Partner of the North Texas Food Bank serving Navarro County. This allows them to plan for ordering food according to families' needs at no cost to families. Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 - The Texas Veterans Parade Weekend begins at 5:30 pm on Friday night at the Palace Theater. Historic military vehicles will line the brick street in front of the theater on 6th Avenue. The program will start at 6:30 pm. The Choir of the First Baptist Church in Corsicana will sing the National Anthem and some patriotic songs to kick off the evening. Singer Dave Tanner will present the national debut of a song dedicated to the World War II generation. Medal of Honor holder Lt. Col. William Swenson will take the stage to discuss how the events of the 9/11 attack on America changed the course of his life from aspiring to work for the U.S. Department of State to enlisting in the American Army. The Texas Veterans Parade will be presenting awards that evening. They include the Gov. Beauford Jester Award, the James Acree Award, the Congressman Barton-Wright Award, and the prestigious Navarro-Garcia award. Tickets include the wine, beer, and food reception. Saturday, May 21 - The Barry Volunteer Fire Department is holding a BBQ Fundraiser at the fire station. The event runs from 5 pm to 7 pm. The menu includes brisket, sausage and pork, along with beans, potato salad, dessert and tea, $12 for adults, and $7 for kids. There will also be a live auction and drawings for prizes. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Saturday, May 21 - Fish Fry Fundraiser for the Chatfield Volunteer Fire Department at the Chatfield-Tupelo Community Center, 4808 FM 1603, Chatfield, from 5:30-7:30 pm. If you have an unserviceable US, state, M.I.A., or military flag, bring it to the American Legion, 632 N. Beaton St. If the post is closed, you can place the flag in a plastic bag and hang it on the front door. After 2 pm daily, bring it inside. If you can not afford a new US flag, the American Legion will replace your unserviceable US flag with a new US Flag. Honor Flight DFW is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that is committed to flying veterans, at no cost to the veteran, round trip to Washington, DC with a one night stay, to see the WW II Memorial and other monuments in the Washington area. They will fly any veteran of a War era since WW II, but priority is for WW II and terminally ill veterans. They have a "guardian" assigned to each veteran to assist him or her during the trip and a volunteer medical staff for each flight. Honor Flight DFW pays for the cost for the veteran and all others pay their own expenses. For more information about this organization and flight schedules, visit www.honorflightdfw.org. This is one way for us to honor our veterans while we still have them around.
